At the C.A.R.E. Foundation, our mission is to provide a safe and permanent home for exotic animals that cannot return to the wild. Many of these animals come to us through two primary avenues: owner surrenders and confiscations. Each path tells a story of the challenges and commitments involved in caring for exotic wildlife.
Owner Surrenders: A Critical Need for Responsible Pet Ownership
Exotic pets, while fascinating, often require specialized care that most owners are unprepared to provide. The allure of owning an exotic animal can sometimes overshadow the complex needs of these creatures. Unfortunately, some individuals acquire exotic pets without fully understanding their responsibilities. When these animals become too challenging to manage, or when the owner realizes they cannot meet the animal's needs, they may surrender them to a sanctuary like ours.
Owner surrenders are a vital part of our work. They offer us the chance to provide these animals with the care they need and deserve. Every surrender is a reminder of the importance of responsible pet ownership and the need for education on the complexities of keeping exotic animals as pets. We work closely with previous owners to ensure a smooth transition for the animals, helping them adjust to their new environment.
Confiscations: Protecting Wildlife and Ensuring Compliance
In addition to surrenders, we also receive animals through confiscations. These often involve intervention by agencies such as the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), and local animal services. Confiscations typically occur when exotic animals are kept illegally or inappropriately, or when their conditions are deemed inhumane.
When authorities find exotic animals being kept under improper conditions, they step in to protect the animals and enforce regulations designed to ensure their welfare. These animals are then brought to us, where we provide the specialized care and permanent sanctuary they need. Confiscations help address issues of illegal wildlife trade and ensure that animals are not subjected to harmful conditions.
A Lifelong Commitment to Our Residents
Whether through surrenders or confiscations, every animal that arrives at the C.A.R.E. Foundation is given a new lease on life. Our dedicated team of caregivers works tirelessly to provide the best possible care, ensuring that each animal receives the attention and resources they need to thrive in a safe environment.
Our work is a testament to the importance of wildlife conservation and responsible pet ownership. By providing a sanctuary for these animals, we not only give them a safe haven but also work to raise awareness about the challenges of exotic pet ownership and the need for proper care.
